Kirk'in of the Tartans:

The Kirkin’ ceremony celebrates the Scottish roots of the Presbyterian Church, and was begun in America in 1941 by Dr. Peter Marshall, a native Scot, Chaplain of the Senate, and minister at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC. His sermon, entitled “the Kirkin’ of the Tartan” encouraged unity of the people of the United States in the face of threats of war in Europe as well as funds for British war relief. Thereafter, the St. Andrews Society then began holding annual ‘kirking’ at Washington Cathedral and the custom spread across the United States.

The service at First Presbyterian Church Beaufort includes traditional Scottish prayers and hymns, kilts & tartan, music, and other aspects of Scottish culture. The service is a churching (kirking), or blessing, of the church family in the church.

The entire Beaufort community is invited to attend and celebrate the traditions of freedom and friendship this service represents at FPC Beaufort.

The most important thing about this policy and your wedding at First Presbyterian Church Beaufort is that God wants to be part of your wedding, your marriage, and your life. As scripture reminds us,

Put God first and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success”, Proverbs 3:6

Our wedding policy is outlined in the following attachment. The rules governing weddings are designed to keep our focus on Almighty God as we help you prepare for a lifetime together.

To inquire on holding your wedding at First Presbyterian Church, please call the church office (843-524-3051) to speak with one of our pastors.

The Presbyterian Church (USA) Directory for Worship declares:

Marriage is a gift God has given to all humankind for the entire human family.  For Christians, marriage is a covenant through which a man and woman are called to live out together before God their lives of discipleship. In a service of Christian marriage, a life-long commitment is made by a woman and man to each other, publicly witnessed and acknowledged by the community of faith.

Funerals & Memorial Services:

The Christian Funeral or Memorial Service is a time when people of God gather to give thanks for the gift of life of the one who has died. The Christian Service should ordinarily be held in the Sanctuary to provide witness to our faith in God's continuing gift of life to us in Jesus Christ.

During this difficult time please contact Dr. Patrick Perryman or Becky Albright @ 843-524-3051.
