Vic Varner, Director of Music

Vic Varner returned as our music director August 1st. He began his church music career at the age of 18 when his home church, North Charleston United Methodist, asked him to direct a youth choir. Since that time he has worked as a church musician, leading choirs and ensembles in ten different churches spanning some 40+ years.

Vic’s church appointments have always been part time positions with full time emphasis being on music education. His undergrad degree is in Music Education from Charleston Southern University and his Masters of Music Education is from Winthrop University. Vic retired from 30 years of high school music education in 2011. His school choirs have performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and have been nationally ranked in competitions from Orlando to Toronto. He is currently teaching three classes at USCB including University Chorus, Jazz History and Intro to Music. Vic performs as a singer/guitarist with his jazz quartet at venues throughout the southeast; twice featured in Charleston’s Piccolo Spoleto Festival and most recently at Palmetto Bluff’s “Music to Your Mouth” jazz series.

Vic was music leader at First Presbyterian five years ago, but left to start USCB’s choral program. He fondly remembers the diligent efforts of the Chancel Choir and the powerful hymn-singing of our congregation.
