It's Book and A Buck Month!

MAY IS FIRST PRESBYTERIAN’S BOOK AND A BUCK MONTH! There are many children in northern Beaufort County who have few to no books in their homes. St. Helena Elementary School is promoting literacy for their students by sending books home to read over the summer and hosting a “reading camp” for third graders. Books are needed. The Beaufort County Health Department also maintains a “Book Corner” where gently used books are kept and children are encouraged to take one home.

You can help these efforts to improve children’s literacy in

Beaufort County in one of 4 ways:

1) Take a “Book and a Buck” sticky and bring back the requested book with a $1 bill inside (to purchase library books needed by the school)

2) Bring the book without a buck

3) Make a financial donation

4) Bring gently used books for the Beaufort County Health Department’s book corner.

In May, the little red wagon will be in the narthex on Sunday mornings and in the hall by the church office during the week. Presbyterians hold education and reading dear and this is a way to help children learn that love. Please join in this effort to make a difference in the lives of our children.Thank you!

Presbyterians Respond to Earthquake Disaster

The death toll from the massive earthquake in Nepal continues to rise. Nearly 8,000 are known dead and more than 17,000 were injured and left homeless when the 7.8 quake struck just west of the capital of Kathmandu on April 25. The quake, the worst in more than 80 years, along with many serious aftershocks has also caused damage in parts of India and Bangladesh.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is providing emergency relief and short-term recovery in the impacted areas. Immediate response will help provide needed food, water, supplies and medicine to the impacted towns and villages. As long term recovery plans are developed, PDA will accompany and further financially support our partners in the area to insure that a comprehensive recovery is sustained.

The needs for the response will be great.  God’s people are once again called on to stand in the “GAP”

Give. Act. Pray.

It’s HIP TO CLIP Box Tops for Education for Thornwell!

General Mills launched Box Tops for Education in 1996. Since then, the program has given more than $400 million to schools across the country. Today, 30,000 schools participate. Hundreds of products participate; you probably already have several in your pantry, freezer, and fridge. New items are being added to the program constantly, so watch for the logo on your favorites.

For every Box Top you clip, Thornwell will receive 10 cents. That may not sound like a lot, but it adds up quickly.  Thornwell has earned $2,152.40 (#9 in SC) for the 2014-15 school year.  They could receive up to $20,000 from clipped Box Tops; let’s help them get there during the 2015-16 school year!  It’s easy:

  1. Find Box Tops on hundreds of products.
  2. Clip Box Tops from each package (making sure the coupon hasn’t expired!).
  3. Place Box Tops in bin in office (or Melanie’s mailbox).

The Mission Committee will send the tops to Thornwell periodically. Twice a year (March 1st and November 1st) Thornwell will send all the Box Tops in to get cash with which to buy books, toys, and other equipment. Thank you.

From The Green Team!

In response to God’s call to love and care for His creation, First Presbyterian Church of Beaufort formed an Environmental Stewardship Committee earlier this year. Our goal is to purposefully strive to become better stewards of God’s entrusted creation. We ask all members to join us in joyfully committing to preserve Earth’s beauty so that generations to come may enjoy the abundant gifts of our environment.
